Sammy lent me books about karate and the other martial arts. I hid them in my school bag and read them late at night, after Mum went to bed. Whenever I could, I practised the moves Sammy showed me.

‘So, what’s the plan?’ Steve said, when I told him what I’d been up to.

‘I’m not really sure,’ I said. ‘But to start with, I have to be good enough to confront an opponent.’

For two months, I trained with Sammy Shu. We had a routine. Every morning before school, I’d go to Sammy’s place and he’d feed me. Then we’d go outside to do some deep-breathing exercises.
